Hat Fitting Guide
The right hat starts with the right fit. A hat that looks great but fits poorly isn't a great hat. Here's how to get it right.

How to Measure Your Head
- Use a soft tape measure. A string and a ruler work too.
- Wrap it where the hat will sit: about a finger-width above your eyebrows and the tops of your ears, around the back of your head.
- Keep it snug, not tight. Measure twice.
- Use the larger number if you get two readings, and check it against the chart below.

Long Oval vs. Round
Two heads can measure the same and need different hats. Most people have a regular or long oval head: longer front to back than side to side. A long oval head in a regular oval hat will feel tight on the forehead and back and loose on the sides.
Tailor hats are built on a [regular / long oval] block. [Note any shapes offered in other ovals.] If a hat presses on your forehead but rocks side to side, the oval is the problem, not the size.
How Tight Should a Cowboy Hat Be?
Snug enough to stay on in a breeze, loose enough that you forget it's there. You should feel even contact all the way around with no pressure points.
- Too tight: red line on your forehead, headache after an hour, hat rides up.
- Right: even contact, sits level, stays put when you nod.
- Too loose: drops toward your eyebrows, slides when you turn, lifts in wind.
Where a Hat Should Sit
Roughly level, a finger-width above your eyebrows in front and just above your ears on the sides. Tip it forward slightly if you like, but if it's touching your ears or resting on your brow, it's too big.

Between Sizes and Long Hair
Between sizes: size up and use the adjustable sweatband to bring it in. A hat that's slightly big can be tightened. One that's too small can only be stretched so far.
Long hair: measure the way you'll wear it. Hair worn down, in a low ponytail or a braid changes your measurement, sometimes by a full size.
